Patricia CruzDental Assistant

  • Patricia Cruz, a lifelong Rockaway resident, died June 2. She was 22.
  • Cruz, who was born in New York, was a dental assistant.

    She was preceded in death by her brother, Miguel.

    Cruz is survived by her father, Miguel Cruz; mother, Isabel (nee Mendez) Cruz; brother, Ricardo A. Jimenez; and sister, Debbie Montalvo.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A Mass was celebrated at St. Camillus. Interment was at Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens.

    Ann Marie Daniel

    Medical Office Assistant

    Ann Marie Daniel, a Rockaway resident for more than 25 years, died June 2. She was 47.

    Daniel was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad. She was a member of the Trinity St. John’s Episcopal Church, and worked as a medical office assistant.

    She is survived by her parents; sons, Tyrone and Tristan; fiancée; three brothers; one sister; nine nieces and nephews; one grandson; and countless family members and friends.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted by Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, with visitation at Gaffney’s Friendship Chapel. A Mass was celebrated at Trinity of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hewlett.

    James Marrero

    Security Guard

    James Marrero, a Rockaway resident for nearly 35 years, died June 2. He was 47.

    Marrero, who was born in the Bronx on July 22, 1957, was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He worked as a security guard.

    He was preceded in death by his father, Victor Marrero and stepfather, Filipe Franco Ramos.

    Marrero is survived by his mother, Amparo Franco; children, Isis Jasmine, Christina Marlene and Christopher; sisters, Doreen (Anthony) Pascual and Marlene Franco; aunt, Carmen Ramos; cousins, Emilio, Robert, Frankie, Willie, Raul and Nancy; nieces, Lauren and Ashley; nephew, Anthony Jr.; and four special friends, Angel, Elizabeth, Minerva and Theresa.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, with visitation at Gaffney’s Friendship Chapel. Disposition was at Oxford Hills Crematory.

    The family wished to send a special thank you to Iglesia Roboth of Far Rockaway.

    Gilbert Alexander McGivan

    Security Guard

    Gilbert Alexander McGivan a Rockaway resident for more than 20 years, died May 28. He was 64.

    McGivan, who was known by many as “Gilly Mac,” was born in St. Thomas, Jamaica, West Indies, on March 31, 1941. He was a member of the Church of St. Rose of Lima, and worked as a security guard for immigrations/customs.

    McGivan is survived by his wife, Delisa McGivan; daughters, Marjorie, Nicole, Raquel, Debbie and Celia; son, George; stepdaughters, Pat and Judith; stepson, Tony; siblings, Egerton and Dassette; and other family members and friends.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, with visitation at Gaffney’s Friendship Chapel. A Mass was celebrated by St. Rose of Lima Church. Interment was at All Saints Cemetery in Great Neck.

    John H. O’Brien

    WWII Veteran

    John H. O’Brien, a lifelong Rockaway Park resident, died June 6.

    O’Brien, who was born in Manhattan, was a former Rockaway lifeguard. He served in the United States Navy during WWII, was a volunteer at St. Camillus and was retired from his work as a supervisor for Allied Management.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Auer O’Brien and brother, James F. O’Brien.

    O’Brien is survived by his son, Barry O’Brien (Barbara); brothers, Thomas C., Gerald and Timothy J. O’Brien; sisters, Catherine L., Patricia A. and Irene C. O’Brien; and grandchildren, Jennifer L. O’Brien (Walter), Gregory P., Michael C. and Laura M.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Friday, June 10 from 2-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Camillus on Saturday, June 11 at 9:45 a.m. Interment will be at St. John’s Cemetery.

    Daniel J. Smith

    NYS Court Clerk

    Daniel J. Smith, a lifelong resident of Belle Harbor and Breezy Point, died June 1.

    Smith, who was born in New York City, was a NYS court clerk.

    He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. (nee Coyne) Smith; son, Michael (Patricia); daughters, Ann Corde (Brian), Patricia Ryan (Paul), Corinne Budde (Richard); and grandchildren, Colin, Aislinn, Gavin, Glynnis, Grace, Deirdre and Daniel.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis de Sales. Interment was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.

    Luz H. Torres

    Homemaker

    Luz H. Torres, a Rockaway resident for nearly 30 years, died May 31.

    Torres, who was born in Puerto Rico, was a homemaker.

    She is survived by her husband, Jose Torres; son, Marcos Diaz; brother, Antonio Matos; sisters, Carmen Rodriguez and Laura Matos.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea. Interment will be at Lutheran/All Faiths Cemetery.
