Search Still On For Drowned 15-Year Old

Police helicopters and boats continued at press time to search for the body of 15-year-old Jermaine Cohen of Brooklyn, who was swept away from Beach 94 Street on Sunday evening by a raging rip current. Cohen, in the water with three other young men, was not a strong swimmer, according to his friends. The four, part of a larger group who had been playing football on the beach, went into the water about 20 minutes after the lifeguards went off duty. Wade McDonald, 40, shown at right being worked on by EMS workers, died from cardiac arrest when he went to the youth’s rescue. Two other young men managed to get themselves out of the water. A third was rescued by surfer Lincoln Mayne. For more photographs depicting the massive response to the drowning incident, see page 12.
