Local Woman Killed In Motorcycle Accident

By Howard Schwach

A Rockaway Beach woman was killed last Thursday when her motorcycle collided with a car exiting a parking lot in Far Rockaway, police said.

Patricia Cruz, 22, of 8600 Shore Front Parkway, was riding with other motorcyclists when she collided with a 2003 Nissan Maxima making a left turn out of the Russell Sage Church parking lot onto Central Avenue.

Cruz and the others were riding southbound on Central Avenue, just south of Sage Street when the accident occurred at about 9 p.m.

The other riders told police that they were all slowing down for a red light when the Nissan shot out of the church driveway, slamming into Cruz so hard that her bike left the pavement before coming to rest.

Cruz was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Published reports said that Cruz loved riding her brand new Honda motorcycle, and was the driving force behind a charity ride to benefit victims of sickle cell disease the following day.

The driver of the Nissan was not charged.
