Channel Couple Terrorized In Assault, Mugging
A Broad Channel teenager was arrested over the Memorial Day weekend after he and an accomplice allegedly beat up and mugged a man who was walking home with his wife after a night out.
John M. Ogden, 18, of 526 Cross Bay Boulevard is accused of pouncing on Christopher Errico early Sunday morning near West 13 Road, according to court records obtained by The Wave. Errico said Ogden and another man attacked him from behind before stealing his wallet and a gold chain.
Errico’s wife, Kerry, watched in fright as the men attacked her husband. The couple, in their early 30s, had been walking home from the Grassy Point Bar/Hotel, not far from the Cross Bay Bridge, at the time of the alleged incident.
Police also interviewed a witness who was alerted by the late-night commotion on the street near her home and saw the attack.
Errico suffered cuts to his forehead and mouth after being repeatedly kicked and punched. He received six stitches at a local hospital.
“Here is a happy couple who hired a [baby]sitter to go out to enjoy the holiday weekend… their fun evening turned into a tragic experience,” a concerned family member told The Wave. Others who heard about the alleged attack were surprised that it could happen in such a close-knit community, where everyone seems to know one another.
Ogden was arrested several hours later during Broad Channel’s Memorial Day parade. He is charged with two counts of second-degree robbery and second-degree assault. His bail was set at $2,500 cash/$5,000 bond, according to a spokesperson for Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown. He is due back in court on June 15.
Court records indicated that Ogden did not act alone, but information regarding his alleged accomplice was not immediately available.
