Donations Asked For Cross Bay Flags

The Broad Channel Fire Department and the American Legion Post 1404 will line 185 telephone poles along Cross Bay Boulevard with American Flags to honor U.S. troops fighting overseas.

In 2003, local activist and volies president Edward O’Hare led a campaign to raise funds to purchase American flags to fly on every telephone pole throughout the Broad Channel community. The groups raised $12,500 to purchase 350 flag kits at a cost of $35 each.

The project’s original intention was to line the 185 telephone poles along Cross Bay Boulevard, but as the donations kept coming, it was decided to line all the side streets as well.

The flags were taken down after Labor Day weekend and Galaxy Cleaners in Howard Beach cleaned them all, free of charge.

With Hurricane Isabel and two other big storms in 2003, many of the flags were damaged. The Lady’s Auxiliary of the American Legion repaired all but 75, which were destroyed. On Memorial Day 2004, the flags were flying again.

This year, after the extremely windy conditions of the past two years, only the telephone poles along Cross Bay Boulevard will have American flags. Individuals or groups, who would like flags on their block must purchase and maintain them. Those interested in purchasing American flags should contact Eddie O’Hare at 718-318-5504 or the American Legion.

Approximately 100 new flags are needed this year for the boulevard. The American Legion is asking for a donation of $20 and all the names will be posted on Broad Channel websites. For more information, visit www.bro adchannel.org or www.americanlegion post1404.com.

Checks can be made out to “American Legion Post 1404 Flag Program” and mailed to 209 Cross Bay Boulevard, Broad Channel, New York 11693.
