Fisheads Seek To Win L.I. Rugby Spectacular

The Rockaway Fisheads so-far successful Spring season continues this week at Lido Beach with the Long Island Rugby Club’s annual Mothers Day Rugby Spectacular. The Fisheads marched all the way to the finals in last years edition of the Mothers Day gala before bowing to the White Plains RFC in a brutal and closely contested “main event”.

Rockaway showed up with just enough players last year (sound familiar?) but managed to nearly run the table all day. The Fisheads numbers have been light this spring as well, but they have been winning most of their matches in spite of themselves.

Player coaches Kermit Egan and Bob Johnson do not like the steadily declining turnout and have fired a missive for all to hear: “The team cannot function completely on the backs of aging veterans” said Johnson in a recent interview.

“If our club is to continue as a consistent winning organization, the younger members must show up. If we do not get the numbers required and continue to wear down our older players, the club may have to cease operations for a year until more reliable teammates can be recruited.

Johnson continued, “There are a lot of young kids who are a part of this club who supposedly like to play Rugby. Lately it seems that getting them on the field is a problem, and I, for one, do not know why. I hope they realize that the team’s immediate future depends on them. I am hoping the trend reverses itself this week and the team turns out in force. We nearly won this tournament last year and I know we can get over the hump with a few fresh legs in the later matches should we go that far.”

The tournament will be played on Lido Beach Blvd. in the park directly adjacent to the Loop Parkway. Matches start at 9:00 a.m.

The Fisheads season will wrap up with consecutive home matches on May 14 and 21 against the Danbury Mad Hatters and the Wales Dragons (A Welsh touring side who will play an exhibition against the Fisheads at

Ft. Tilden). June will feature the annual Rockaway 7’s Tournament (June 18). AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Becky Brouder (AKA “Blackout Becky”)and the Rockaway Fishtails Ladies Rugby Club are starting practices for the summer 7’s season.

The girls are looking for female athletes who like contact and intense competition. No rugby experience is necessary as Becky and the girls will teach you everything you need to know. Practices will be held once or twice a week on weekday nights at Ft. Tilden and those days and times will be announced in THE WAVE. Contact Becky at 917 496-4258 for further info. It’s a blast and if you think you have what it takes, the Fishtails welcome all who are willing to give it a shot.

RUGGER PLUGGERS: Will Local Family Man Tyrone Sperling be allowed out to play this week, or is he

under restriction? MGM has announced a 3rd sequel to the Sandra Bullock hit “Miss Congeniality.” This one will feature Grouch McCann in an off-shoot entitled “ Ms. Congeniality meets Mr. Nice Guy.” Talk about the right man for the right role!!! Kermit Egan will no doubt be a first ballot inductee to the Fisheads Hall Of Fame.

The team will save money on his likeness as the trophy makers will use pipe cleaners for his body and extremities (Much less expensive than bronze). Adam Lynch still unseen since the play-off….Could Joe Billionaire grow into Joe Trillionaire before he makes it back to the pitch? Kevin “Deliverance” Stoney Brook MIA last match, but may be back from his rafting trip in time for the LI Tournament. Bob Johnson continues to juggle any and all enterprises and makes it look easy. thats all!!!!
