Tazer For Man Naked, Disturbed
An emotionally disturbed Rockaway man caused a scene on Beach Channel Drive last weekend when he stripped off his clothes and went wild on top of a trailer, police and witnesses said.
The eyebrow-raising incident started at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday when the man dove into Jamaica Bay near Beach 112 Street. Police, who thought they were responding to a water rescue, arrived to find the man naked and going berserk on top of a trailer parked near the water.
“He was running like a lunatic, jumping up and down on the roof with a belt in his hand,” said a woman who witnessed the incident from her car and called The Wave.
Traffic on Beach Channel Drive ground to a halt as the strange drama unfolded. The witness said she watched in amazement as the man repeatedly cracked his belt on the roof of the trailer, stopping occasionally to point uptown.
“God knows what he was saying,” she said.
A police source said the man was “ranting and raving incoherently.”
The first officers on the scene called in a supervisor and the Emergency Service Unit for help in subduing the man. He was eventually zapped with a Tazer and put in a head-to-toe restraint before being transported to Peninsula Hospital Center by EMS.
The Wave is withholding the man’s name because police classified him as an “Emotionally Disturbed Person” and said he is not being charged with any crime. The man’s mother, who spoke reluctantly about her son’s present condition, said his doctors are trying to find out what triggered the episode. Her son, she said, has no history of mental illness. Doctors have reportedly ruled out drugs and alcohol as factors, she said.
“We’re trying to get the pieces together,” she said. “This is hard for us.”
