Sarnoff Teaches Young People About Cartooning At F.R. Library
By Miriam Rosenberg
Over a three-week period, the participants spent three days with Sarnoff as he taught them the basics of cartooning.
Those who attended the workshops drew one-cell cartoons, that Sarnoff hopes will be published in The Wave, using the central theme of violencewhich was suggested by the students. The one-cell method uses one picture to convey a message to the reader.
To illustrate what he wanted the participants to do, Sarnoff used one of his own editorial cartoons, from the April 15 issue of The Wave. The cartoon showed a surfer riding the waves as he celebrates the announcement of a surfers only area in Rockaway Beach.
“I’d like them to master the skills and techniques necessary to fulfill their conceptions,” Sarnoff told The Wave about what he wanted to teach those who attended the workshops.
The cartooning workshop is the latest workshop held in a Rockaway library sponsored by the Rockaway Museum.
