Surfing Beach To Be Designated Today

Local representatives and Department of Parks and Recreation officials are expected to designate the city’s first “surfing only” beach today at a 2 p.m. ceremony on Beach 90 Street.

Surfers are encouraged to don their wetsuits, wax their boards and take to the ocean for the historic occasion.

Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer, City Councilman Joseph Addabbo Jr., Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe and Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Emily Lloyd are scheduled to attend, according to Parks spokesperson Gina Masullo.

Benepe is likely to credit Pheffer and Addabbo with overturning a provision in the state’s health code, which in the past he said was the major obstacle to establishing a “surfing only” spot within city limits.

The beach will be exclusively for surfers and will not be overseen by a lifeguard.
