Police officers on their regular patrol walked into a shootout between two groups of teenagers on Wednesday outside of 434 Beach 54 Street.

Police sources say that Darkel Carmichael, 17, who lives in Ocean Village, was involved in a “confrontation” with teens from the Edgemere Houses when they arrived on the scene. According to those sources, Carmichael is “loosely affiliated” with a gang at the Ocean Village Houses on Beach 57 Street.

“Rounds were exchanged,” the source said.

Nobody was hit and the police never fired any shots, according to the source.

One of the police officers chased Carmichael into 443 Beach 54 Street, where he allegedly entered an apartment that was not his own. He was arrested in the apartment and a .38 caliber pistol was recovered.

According to a spokesperson for Richard Brown, the Queens District Attorney, Carmichael has been charged with burglary in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.

He was expected to be arraigned on those charges sometime late yesterday, the DA’s office said.

A second man who was arrested fleeing from the scene was arrested for drug possession, but police say he had no connection to the shooting incident.
