Beach Volleyball League Preps For 2005 Season
The snow thawed just enough for the Rockaway volleyball players to mosey on down to Jameson’s Pub on 3/30 for the first meeting of the 2005 season. Unfortunately, Cubby saw his shadow and went back inside practically guarantying four more weeks of winter. Attendance was good and spirits were high in anticipation of the summer campaign.
Commissioner Patty Moule was a bit under the weather and unable to attend but her committee members ably picked up the slack, led by the “Human Megaphone” Bugsy Goldberg. Each year the first order of business is to find out which teams will be returning and which will not. All but a handful of last year’s teams came to the meeting with their $50 deposits to insure their place for 2005. Additionally, several new teams were placed on a waiting list to fill any unclaimed spots
As usual, there will be four different divisions with varying levels of skill. A suggestion was made to realign the teams into more accurate groupings based on drinking ability and to employ more appropriate names like the Heineken, Budweiser, Coors Light and O’Doul’s divisions but no teams were willing to play in the O’Doul’s non-alcoholic beverage section. And none are expected in the foreseeable future!
In preparation for the season, the next critical date is fast approaching. Our final meeting will be held on Thursday 4/21 at 8:00 PM at the Kerry Hills Pub. Captains are required to bring the balance of their league fee and their uniform orders. Rosters should be submitted as well. The forms will be available on our website, whose address has been simplified to www.rbvl.com. The general feedback on the 2004 season has been very positive and the league is grateful for everyone’s input. Feel free to attend the meeting and to voice any of your personal likes and dislikes. We are always striving for improvement.
Prospective new referees are welcome to come by if you would like to be worked into our rotation. You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.
You can mark a few special dates on your calendars already. Wednesday, 5/25 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Hopefully it won’t rain for the third straight year. Wednesday, 6/1 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until 8/13. On Saturday, 8/13, the league championships will be played at Riis Park during the day – keep your schedules clear. It’s not too early to save the date of the league awards dinner, which will be held at the Beach Club on Friday night, 9/16. We don’t want to hear you couldn’t make it because you had a prior engagement, like your Aunt’s housekeeper’s cousin’s neighbor’s dog was being spayed and neutered that night. Mark your calendar! It will only be a short few weeks before opening day arrives and there is still much to be done beforehand. If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule at 212-604-7087. This is her work number and a message can be left anytime, day or night.
Finally, congratulations to Jimmy, Pam and Morgan who welcomed a new addition to the family, baby Seamus Mack. See you on 4/21.
