April Madness At Hammel Center

28 Teams, 18 Games, 3 Days…. Now that’s Madness!

Hammel Community Center held its First Annual 2 on 2 & 3 on 3 Basketball Tournaments on April 6 – 8, 2005. This electrifying tournament was filled with some unbelievable action pack games.

The team of Cynthia Smalls, Larry Brand, and Kadeem McNeill used great teamwork, and balance scoring to take first place honors.

In the championship game, Larry Brand finish with 17 points, and 8 steals. Cynthia Smalls didn’t let being a girl stop her from pulling down 14 rebounds, 12 points, 4 steals, and 3 blocks. Kadeem McNeill was outstanding on defense with 6 steals, 4 blocks and 10 rebounds to go along with his 8 points.

In the 2 on 2 Little Big Man Tournament, the runaway winners were Cinque Williams & Trevon Greene. This 7 & 8 year olds combo was undeniably too much to handle. With impressive moves and flawless shooting they were easily crown championing. Trevon Greene had 11 points, 6 steals, and 4 blocks. Cinque Williams finish with 6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 block.

Hammel Community Center located 81-14 Rockaway Beach Blvd. has quietly become the Mecca of Basketball in the Rockaways. This past fall, the First Annual Game Over “Stop the Violence” Basketball Tournament featured the top basketball players from the Rockaways, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. All games were played in front of a standing room only gymnasium.

In February & March, the 27th Annual NYCHA, Community Operations, Citywide Basketball Tournament was held at Hammel Community Center. Teams Hammel A, Team Dayo, Sean’s Hammel Ballers, and The Sports All-stars were crown Queens Borough Champions in the 11 and Under, 13 and Under, 15 and Under, and 18 and Under divisions. On Saturday, April 16 - 17, 2005 these four teams will play against the Borough Champions from Staten Island. The games will be played at City College.
