Broad Channel Bits

By Liz Guarino

It may be April, but the rainy, windy weather that comes our way some days has made some folks wonder where the spring is hiding! It’s probably tucked in behind some clouds because it does peek out on certain days, bringing great temperatures and bright sunny skies with it.

Back by popular demand is the St. Virgilius presentation of Adults Puttin on The Hits. It will be held on Friday, April 8 at the American Legion Hall at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. There will be food, beer, wine and soda included, raffles and— as usual— no shortage of laughs. There will be dancing to the music spun by DJ Healy. For a great night out, join the fun. For tickets or acts call Maura 718-634-9131 or Jenny 718-945-2356. They do deliver. Please come out and support the school and community.

“Spring Greens” is the name of the program that will be at the Wildlife Refuge on Sunday, April 10 at 11 a.m. Binoculars will help you see the tree top flowers and spring buds as you travel along the refuge trails. Reservations are required and can be made at 718 318-4340.

It’s April and the vollies will go door to door in this, their Fund Drive Month. The BCVFD president, Eddie O’Hare, said all members have worked very hard to trim operating costs. As a result they are asking for only $60 per family this year instead of $75. A little math tells us $60 for a year is a mere $5 per month. If you don’t want to wait for a vollie to come to your door, you can bring your donation to the firehouse.

A Sauerbraten Dinner will be held in the Christ Presbyterian Church hall on Sunday, April 10 starting at 3 p.m. Cost is $10 per dinner. Reservations are necessary for this event. Call Joyce at 718 474-7769, Janet at 718 318-6454 or the church at 718 945-3443 for reservations or free delivery. Please make all calls a week before the dinner.

P.S. 47 has started an adult book club.  It meets once a month in school at night. They are presently reading “Angels and Demons” by Dan Brown and they will discuss it on Monday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m.

A bus trip to Atlantic City on Wednesday, April 27 to the Hilton is being run by the St. Virgilius Golden Age Club. Cost per person is $26 with coin return of $15. Bus will leave from Noel Road and Cross Bay Blvd. at 8: 30 a.m. Contact Winnie at 718 474-2783 to reserve a seat.

A two-session Defensive Driving Class will be held in St. Virgilius School lunchroom on two consecutive nights: Monday, May 2 and Tuesday, May 3 from 7 to 10 p.m. The course, sponsored by St. Virgilius Parents Association, gives up to 4 points off your license or 10% off auto insurance for each of three years-upon completion. Cost is $55 per person. There will be no exam given and refreshments will be served. Call Helen at 718 945-4648 or Cindy at 718 634-5449 to register for the course.

Guys are invited to slick back their hair and Gals to dig out their poodle skirts and saddle shoes for “Back to the 50’s” on Saturday, April 16 at the American Legion Hall on Cross Bay Blvd. American Legion Post #1404 will be celebrating its 60th anniversary and it is the 50th anniversary of their building! Dance the night away to the music of Wax R Back. Creative Energy will appear and treat you to their a cappella oldies. Food, Soda, wine and draft beer are included in admission. Canned beer will be available at $1 per can. There will be a cash bar as well. Tickets are $30 per person. Call Carol at 718 634-7235 or Jackie at 718 634-3717 for tickets or further information. Almost forgot—there is one more piece of information: A prize will be given to the person dressed in the best 1950’s theme outfit.

Kids Puttin on the Hits, sponsored by St. Virgilius P.A., will be held on Sunday, April 17 at 1 p.m. in the American Legion Hall. A Teen Competition category has been added. The next Books and Bagels book discussion is scheduled for Thursday, April 28 at 10 a.m. Under discussion will be “Memoirs of a Geisha,” by Arthur Golden. A different method of picking books will be discussed as well.

Tax help for seniors is now available at the B.C. Library. The program is already in progress. A volunteer will be available to help you every Wednesday from 1 through 5 p.m. until April 13. Tax helpers are from A.A.R.P.

Help St. Virgilius School by getting and using Waldbaum’s Gift Cards when you shop at the food store. They come in different denominations: $25, $50 and $100. A portion of the card price bolsters school fundraising efforts. Gift cards are available during office hours at the rectory and school office or after the 5 p.m. Saturday mass. They can also be obtained by calling Dawn at 718 474-4182, Kieran at 718 474-6237 or Suzanne at 718 945-3922; gift cards obtained at these numbers will be delivered.
