West Virginia University was not only advancing in the NCAA basketball tournament last Saturday, they were also winning a rugby tournament right here in Rockaway Beach. WVU, led by local stars Chris Callaghan and Tom French, first beat Montclair state in a close and competitive match before running past the Rockaway Junior Fisheads in the Final.

The Rockaway College side was a motley group composed of the younger members of the fishead Rugby Club. Leading the way for them was Oscar Prince, Brendan”Explosion Head” Lunny, Trevor Tubridy, Haden Kose. After winning their first match Rockaway had to step on the field again almost immediately due to the round robin format.

Despite being at a tremendous height and weight disadvantage in the forwards, the locals battled for 60 minutes. In the end, they were out scored lots to not so much.

All in all it was a great day of rugby for all.

Rugger Pluggers:

The Fisheads battle the NYPD this Saturday at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx. Game time is 12 noon. meet at the rugby club at 10am.
