A pair of women – old enough to be grandmothers – were among those arrested last week in a raid at an alleged bookmaking operation in Far Rockaway, police said.

Elizabeth Jordan, 75, and Mabel Beverly, 65, were arrested with two others, Ronnie Brown and Melva Harris, both 54, when officers from the 101 Precinct executed the warrant last Friday afternoon. Police said that each of the defendants had about 15 betting slips in their possession.

Police found 150 loose betting slips and several hundred more that were stored in boxes. They also seized $1,200 in cash, a sign that described the procedure for placing bets and surveillance equipment, according to court records.

The alleged gambling operation took place inside an unassuming one-story commercial building located at 16-01 Central Avenue. It has plywood and bars covering the windows and roll-down gates on the doors.

Brown, of 15-02 Mott Avenue, Jordan, of Beach 9 Street, Beverly of 385 Bay View in Inwood and Harris of 438 Beach 40 Street, are charged with second-degree possession of gambling records. They face up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine, according to a spokeswoman for Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown.

Each was released on their own recognizance following arraignment in Queens Criminal Court on March 19.

They are due back in court on April 21.
