Weiner: Republicans Protect Saudis
On Wednesday, March 9, the House Of Representatives GOP [Republican] leadership defeated a measure that would have prohibited aid to the government of Saudi Arabia.
Representative Anthony Weiner, who represents the west end of Rockaway as well as parts of southern Brooklyn, introduced the measure under the Emergency Supplemental War Time Appropriations Act, After the defeat of the measure by the Republican majority in the house, Weiner made the following statement to the press:
“The Saudis have established themselves as a terrorist’s favorite banker. The Saudis provide half of Hamas’s budget, and they have sent untold millions to Al Qaeda.
“Every year we hear that the Saudis are going to start cracking down on terror, but we have yet to see it happen. It’s long past time to start judging them by their actions, not their words.
“Yet, last night, my Republican colleagues in the House shot down Democratic efforts to ensure that no taxpayer dollars would go to line Saudi pockets.”
In the past, the White House has used funding from the accounts supplemented in this bill to send funding to Saudi Arabia, and there is no guarantee they will not re-direct these funds to the Saudis in the future.
In July of last year, the House passed a similar amendment, over the objections of the Republican leadership, ensuring that the Bush administration could not send any of the funding provided in the Foreign Operations Appropriations bill to Saudi Arabia.
