Stephen Yaeger, local artist, writer and teacher, says that he is self-taught, using his knowledge of science to deal with human/animal anatomy, light, and perspective. “When I was still teaching [at Beach Channel High School], I showed a painting to a colleague—an accomplished classical artist,” he says. “He liked it and told me I had promise.” Yaeger says that he added, “Anyone can pick up a brush and paint, but drawing is the real challenge.”

He also advised Yaeger not to take lessons so that he might develop his own painting style.
