The “real” St. Patrick’s Day may be March. 17, but no county in New York City celebrates St. Patrick’s Day better than the Rockaway Parade, which was held on Saturday, March 5 this year. Mayor Bloomberg, Assemblymen and women of Queens, as well as other prominent figures were all in attendance.

Traditionally, the after-parade party was held at St. Rose of Lima Church Hall, but this year the parade marchers and viewers gathered in pubs in and around the parade vicinities. The best, however, that I found, was at the American Legion Clubhouse on Beach 90 Street, where I came across many old friends, such as: Margie Crawley, a throat cancer survivor who spoke

about her twin sister; Maureen Gilboy whose daughter, Mareen Weice delivered a beautiful baby girl Jan 28; Colleen Pickering, whose father, Bobby Pickering recently died in his sleep; Eileen Scram and Meg Hebert from BPSC; Vietnam veterans, Joe DiKresta and Captain Robex Davaw NYFD Engine 264, retired; ex-RAF Pilot, Ed Murphy from Dublin, Royal Air Force, WWII just received $6,000 back pay from RAF, with wife BEA; Ed Flanagan landed on Normandy with the 79 Div. (He told me the OMAHA was the only transport ship to have a bathtub because it transported President Roosevelt in 1942 -45); Joe Troy and wife Nancy are annuals; Joe Crawley and wife; Lynn and Marilyn Seibert of Rockaway; Ed Deacey performed for the happy crowd and, of course, the bagpipers and young Irish Step Dancers.

St. Patrick’s Day is still awake and you have enough time to get a little shamrock on your nails. This past Saturday I sat in Janet’s Salon watching the “Parade” while Janet artistically painted a shamrock on one of my nails. She always decorated my nails on special occasions. And, now she has a unique way of drying those nails that make them last over three weeks. Believe me – I’ve been to many salons, but Janet’s is the best I have come across. And, Lena does a nice job of cutting hair, They are presently looking for a new operator. If you know of anyone send her over.

So many events in the city it is hard for me to keep up, but here goes….At a press reception at the Ritz Carlton I met Lisa Voice, a music consultant, married to a Rock and Roll singer who died in his prime of life.

She is now venturing out to produce a TV series based on their lives which will be aired in Britain and the United States. You’ll be hearing more about her as the months go by.

Over at Pier 54 is the brand new Nomadic Museum featuring the exquisite and magnificent photographic artist, Gregory Colbert. It is really quite something to see. The members of the RAA should go to see it. They will marvel at how he caught the interaction of man and animals, especially children. It is beautifully done. Maybe they will loan a photo or two to the Rockaway Alliance.

The Greek International Chamber of Congress and Tourist Board held a press luncheon at the Pierre Hotel where we caught glimpses on video of their new infrastructure put in place for the Olympic games. They told of the excellent security that is in place and beautiful new hotels, condos and apartments that are for rent and for investors. You may wish to look into it. Call the Greek Tourist Board for more info.

At the LTU (German Aeroflot} reception they announced it will soon fly out of JFK with direct flights to Dusseldorf, Germany.

Grand Expeditions held a media reception at the Explorer’s Club, where, I believe, Frances Abbracciammento’s son is the caterer. Lots and lots of info on real adventure trips including round the world in your own Private Jet. How ultra can you get? Safaris in Africa, Antarctica cruises, Galapagos Islands and any other exotic places you wish to travel. It was very pleasant with ethnic music and tasty hor’s d’oeuvres.
