Education Sets Pre-K Registration

The New York City Department of Education has begun the process of pre-kindergarten enrollment.

To apply for a pre-k program, parents should visit the public elementary school closest to their home and obtain a directory of the pre-kindergarten service sites in their region.

All children who will turn four years old by December 31, 2005, are eligible to apply for pre-kindergarten services for the 2005-2006 school year.

Parents are encouraged to apply by June 21, and must list their top four program choices on their application and provide proof of age and proof of address.

Children must meet all health requirements for entry into the City’s public schools, including a complete physical examination and, as appropriate, immunizations.

Although proof of address is required, parents do not need to present proof of citizenship or a green card to enroll their children.

Pre-kindergarten programs serve approximately 45,000 children a year. Programs are conducted in elementary schools, as well as in community-based organizations.

Programs run either full-day or half-day; details are provided in the directory.
