25 To Life For Chinese Takeout Murder

A Far Rockaway man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the 2003 shooting death of a female employee at a Chinese restaurant on Cornaga Avenue, District Attorney Richard A. Brown announced Wednesday.

Lueggie Dowling, 23, of 409 Beach 51 Street, was found guilty of second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon after a jury trial on January 27.

0Queens Supreme Court Justice Roberta L. Dunlop imposed the 25 years to life sentence. Brown said that on July 18, 2003 Dowling and an accomplice entered the Beautiful Gardens Chinese Restaurant at 21-03 Cornaga Avenue. Lin Li Zhen, 25, also of Far Rockaway, was fatally shot one time in the head.

The robbers fled on foot with about $500 in cash.

Dowling and Jamel Heyward, 26, of Brooklyn, were apprehended in September 2003. The latter is being held without bail and is awaiting trial.

“The victim was a young woman who worked long hours to support her family. Her murder was the result of a brutal crime committed with an illegal handgun,” said Brown, who expressed satisfaction with the prison sentence.
