Broad Channel Bits

By Liz Guarino

How nice it was to have Monday’s early morning snow go away so quickly! When it first falls, snow is so pretty. Everything looks so clean and bare tree branches seem almost dressed up with their bare branches frosted nicely. But towards the end of winter even those who love snow would rather not have to shovel it away from their cars and the sidewalks surrounding their houses. Only 23 days to go till the official start of the spring season.

The Broad Channel Pre-K fundraisers announce an evening in Grassy’s called Bar Nite Out on Saturday, February 26 at 9 p.m. Those attending the night will enjoy live music from the band Wine With Sue. The cover charge is $5.00. There will be 50/50’s, raffles, Jello shots. The Band comes from Rockaway and they play a great mix of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s music. (This event replaces a similar event at Grassy’s, which never took place because of a snowstorm that dropped a lot of the white stuff back in January.)

There will be a Brunch with the proceeds for needy servicemen at the VFW Hall on Sunday, February 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is a good opportunity to avoid laboring over a hot stove on Sunday and help a deserving group of people at the same time!

The American Legion will host a Day at the Races to benefit St. Virgilius School on Sunday, February 27 at 3 p.m. A donation of $10 is requested at the door. All the tap beer, wine, soda and franks are included with your donation. A good turnout is hoped for to show support for and keep St. Virgilius School OPEN.

BCAC/Jamaica Bay Little League baseball/softball/tee-ball remaining registration dates are Friday, February 25 from 6:30 p.m. till 8:30 and Saturday, February 26 from 10 a.m. till noon. All registration will be held at the BCAC field house which is located at the BCAC Memorial Field at 1 Road and Crossbay Boulevard. For more information and registration fees please visit the website at: www.Broad Channelac.com website.

Tax filing help for seniors is now available at the B.C. Library. The program is already in progress. A volunteer will be available to help you every Wednesday from 1 through 5 p.m. until April 13. Tax helpers are from A.A.R.P.

Books and Bagels has had its next book discussion rescheduled for Thursday, March 10 at 10 a.m. The book under discussion will be The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. A preliminary check revealed that most folks were not overly thrilled with the book, which was a rather unusual one. It is expected that a new (hopefully better!) way of selecting book choices will be implemented at this discussion.

I got a really nice note signed by Rev. Andrea Zarou and this is what it said: “We at Christ Presbyterian Church wish to thank all who came to our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. It was nice to see old friends and also some new ones—all had a great time. Thanks again.”

A Defensive Driving Course, sponsored by St. Virgilius P.A., will be held on Tuesday, March 1 and Thursday, March 3 in the school lunchroom. It’s not too late to buy chances for St. Virgilius Parents’ Association 20/10 Club. The first drawing was on Tuesday, February 1; drawing will run for 10 weeks. First prize of $200, second prize of $100 and third prize of $50 are awarded weekly. There is an Easter bonus prize of $250. In the tenth week there are two $500 prizes and a prize of $250. Winners can repeat weekly. Chances are $20 each. To buy chances call Karen at 718 945-5823, the rectory at 718 634-5680 or the school at 718 634-6237. Chances make a great gift for St. Patrick’s Day or even Easter!

On Valentine’s Day the senior group, Channelites, had a Valentine Party. Featuring pizza, both round and square, folks munched and enjoyed each other’s company. The January snow storm forced a number of folks indoors, so they enjoyed seeing each other and being together on the day. (The winter snow and ice falls harder on the seniors than any other group.)
