Assemblywoman Audrey I. Pheffer recently joined with AARP and their members to promote consumer protection as well as discuss new legislation to address home improvement contracts.

Senior citizens are oftentimes a prime target for home improvement fraud. They are more likely to live in older homes in need of repair. 73% of homeowners age 75 and older that reported having home repairs, have hired contractors and outside individuals to do the work.

“Unfortunately, we have many ex-amples of home improvement scams that have cost New Yorkers thousand of dollars and even incredible anguish when trying to recover their losses,” said Pheffer. “The legislation is an important step to further protect New Yorkers against home improvement scams. This bill will allow consumers the ability to knowledgeably hire licensed home improvement contractors and furthermore, have a recourse if they are faced with fraud, poor workmanship or project abandonment.”
