Wounded Warriors' Windham Ski Weekend

A group of 10 Wounded Warriors - soldiers who became amputees after being injured in Iraq and Afghanistan - skied at Windham Mountain in the Catskills last weekend thanks in part to Rockaway's own Flip Mullen, the Graybeards, and donations from peninsula residents. After breakfast and lessons in the morning, Warriors went out on the snow with trained instructors. The evenings kicked off with an aprs ski party followed by a night on the town. The event was such a success that Windham Mountain is planning to make it an annual event, and Mullen and the Graybeards are looking to host an event in Rockaway this summer. Here: The Wounded Warriors, city firefighters and Adaptive Sports Program volunteers pose for group photos as the aprs ski party begins.

Volunteers from the Adaptive Sports Program, which has several Rockaway residents among its ranks, show Kevin Pannell, 26, how to use a mono-ski. An Arkansas resident serving in the U.S. Army, Pannell was on foot patrol in northeast Baghdad when an insurgent's grenade landed between his feet. He lost his left leg above and his right leg below the knee in the attack, and has since become an unofficial spokesman for wounded soldiers. "The majority of guys who lose a limb are just so happy to have a second chance," Pannell told The Wave. Besides the skiing, Pannell said the other weekend highlight was being able to hang out with members of the New York City Fire Department. "We're pretty stoked about hanging out with these guys, and they've been nothing but good to us," he said.
