Rockaway Park Express Returns Monday
“The next step in restoration will occur on Monday, February 14, when we will restore Rockaway Park Express Trains,” Larry Gould, of the MTA New York City Transit Division of Operations Planning, said in an e-mail forwarded to The Wave this week.
“Due to the continuing capacity bottleneck, we must shift the train times by a few minutes to prevent congestion and delays. Some trips will run earlier than they used to,” Gould’s e-mail continued. As a service to riders The Wave has reprinted that schedule.
Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer, who took up the battle for the Rockaway Park line after the Chambers Street fire knocked out service on January 23, said “responsive” MTA officials contacted her office with the same advisory Wednesday morning. In the weeks after the suspension Pheffer and her office personnel kept close contact with the MTA and insisted that express A trains return to the west end immediately.
“I demanded it for the Rockaway Park line,” Pheffer told The Wave. “I went to the top of the MTA and said, ‘What’s going on here?’” Pheffer said. “They justify [the suspension] by saying that there are 11,000 people out of Far Rockaway and only 3,000 out of Rockaway Park, but we deserve what we deserve.”
