Queens City Planning Director At CB14 Mtg. Next Week

By Brian Magoolaghan

  • The Department of City Planning’s Queens director will make a special presentation and answer questions at next week’s Community Board 14 meeting.
  • Queens Director John Young will present “Zoning Issues In the Rockaways,” at the request of CB14 leadership, according to the board’s district manager, Jonathan Gaska.

“A lot of people have a lot of questions,” Gaska told The Wave. Gaska expects issues in the Mott Creek, West Lawrence and Bayswater areas will be the focus of the special session, he said.

Young told The Wave this week that his presentation will focus mostly on two areas of Far Rockaway, east of Beach 9 Street, where residents have called for an upzoning in one and a downzoning in the other.

A new zoning “tool” known as R-2A – a modified R-2 – will also be introduced. Young described R-2A, which is designed to stop the proliferations of McMansions, as “a tighter set of rules regulating what is now an R-2.”

Construction issues are now even more common, with nearly every part of the peninsula undergoing development. CB14 will meet at the Knights of Columbus, 333 Beach 90 Street, Tuesday, February 8, at 7:45 p.m. Community members who want to address the board or Young must sign up for speaking time before the meeting begins.
