Stella Maris Rights The Ship With Exciting Home Overtime Win

Stella Maris played like the champions they were in 2004. Stella Maris played like the champions they were in 2004. High School basketball versus a roller coaster ride: which one gets the nod for more peaks and valleys? Your guess is as good as anyone’s. And Stella Maris’ Varsity basketball team has done its very best to keep the pendulum swinging back and forth.

Finally, with a full, healthy squad the team seems to turn two corners only to be brushed back again. But then they find it possible to right the ship and continue until the next valley. With an up-tempo, run and gun style of play the Lady Flippers are an exciting team to watch. When the ball control, decision-making process and focus all gel this young team just may turn some heads. Until then, they all live and learn.

The team raised its league record to 7-3 and overall record to 8-5. Recent league wins over St. Agnes, St. Saviour and Font Bonne Hall sandwiched a non-league loss to Bishop Loughlin. The St. Saviour definitely offered a “peak” moment as Junior Jennifer Anglero notched her 1000th point. Needing eight points, Jen took a corner entry pass, on the left block, from MaryGrace Brady and “calmly” used the glass to reach the milestone at the 2:23 mark of the first quarter. Pandemonium ensued; Jen was mobbed by her teammates and presented with a commemorative ball and flowers. SM’s Principal Miss Geri Martinez offered much deserved words of praise and then the game continued. SM went on to win 60-36 as Anglero led the way with 18 and Erin Casey added 14.

On Monday, January 10th SM hosted Bishop Loughlin and the roller coaster ride was in full drive. In a 78-41 loss, the home white put up 20 and 17 points in the first and fourth quarters and a mere 2 points in each of the second and third. The brightest spot was MaryGrace Brady’s 4 treys and 18 total points for the game.

And just when we thought it was over came Wednesday’s game versus Font Bonne Hall. SM eked out a much needed league victory over the Bonnies in overtime 79-70. Fans were treated to an exciting but sometimes sloppy game of basketball as both teams answered the bell over and over. The score at half time was 32-31 with FHA up. SM went up 49-46 at the end of the third but found themselves down by 5 with 1:20 to go.

Sophomore Alexa Rosella’s steal was converted into a Jen Greene lay-up with under a minute to go. Then Jen Anglero hit one of two from the line to cut it to two. With 8 seconds left in regulation Alexa Rosella hit two free throws to tie it and SM’s defense had a stop to force OT at 64 a piece. SM outscored the Bonnies 15- 6 to earn the win. FHA’s point guard (who missed the last meeting back in Dec. due to injury) returned this game and lit up the place. Dolan scored 30 to lead all scorers. But the combo of Anglero (24, 18 rebounds, 6 blocks) and Rosella (26, 10 rebounds, 6 assists) proved too much.
