New Years In Jail After He’s Shot, Arrested
A teenage Edgemere resident was shot in the chest near his home on New Year’s Eve and was later arrested by police when they discovered he had an open warrant.
Michael Boney, 18, of 54-81 Almeda Avenue was walking through the courtyard at 411 Beach 54 Street at about 1:15 p.m. – on his way home from the store – when he heard several gunshots ring out, police said.
Boney realized he was wounded and staggered to a bench, where minutes later police found him bleeding.
Police from the 101 Precinct sealed off the courtyard area between 51-24 and 51-32 Beach Channel Drive and Commanding Officer Walter Salowski called for a full mobilization of officers in search of a suspect or suspects. An exhaustive search of the Edgemere houses, courtyard and other areas failed to produce a suspect or the weapon used, according to a police source.
Police made three unrelated arrests: two for open warrants and one for criminal possession of marijuana.
Boney, whose injuries were listed as not life threatening, was taken to Jamaica Hospital. He was arrested after police found he had an open warrant.
It was unclear what his alleged offense was at press time.
Police asked anyone with information to call the 101 Precinct Detective Squad at (718) 318-4200.
