State Department Honors Belle Harbor Native

Belle Harbor native Veronica Cassidy Barry was awarded the U.S. Department of State Certificate of Appreciation, by Ambassador Hans H. Hertell at a ceremony held last month in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The award recognized Barry’s “exceptional commitment and dedication in her volunteer efforts within the Dominican community and with Heart Care International for recruiting more than 100 volunteers in the Embassy and American Community.”

Barry completed her volunteer work while she and here husband, John, were assigned to the US Embassy in Santo Domingo. Barry spearheaded an Embassy volunteer group that supports Heart Care International, a US medical team that performs life-saving surgery on pediatric heart patients in the Dominican Republic.

She and her team of volunteers provided translation services, entertainment, medical supplies, and diapers. Her efforts also included financial sponsorship of a little girl who received surgery last-year.

In addition to this award, Barry has been named International Volunteer Coordinator by Heart Care Dominicana.

She continues her volunteer efforts from New York.
