Holiday Lights Brighten Far Rockaway Business District

Detective Willie Olmeda and Officer George Torres (101 Precinct’s Community Affairs) set the Kwanzaa part of the display in place minutes before the ceremony begins.
To begin the December 4 ceremony, RDRC’s Executive Director Curtis Archer offers a prayer for all those attending the lighting ceremony, the police who protect us each day and our men and women in the military.

Among those in front of the just lit display are (L to R0 Penny Chin and Eric Matza (SJEH), Capt. Elwood Selover (101 executive officer), Capt. Walter Salowski (101 commanding officer), Jonathan Gaska (Community Board 14), RDRC President Linda Plummer, Pastor Leslie Mullins (Community Church of the Nazarene), Detective Willie Olmeda (101 Precinct), Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer, Joanie Omeste (Executive Director, Chamber of Commerce), Barbara Smith (Deerfield Civic Association), Assemblywoman Michelle Titus, RDRC’s Curtis Archer and John LePore (Chamber of Commerce). The display lighting was sponsored by the Coalition for Far Rockaway, Community Board 14, Deerfield Civic Association and Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation (RDRC).
Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer, a Far Rockaway resident, was among those who braved the inclement weather to wish happy holidays to those in the Far Rockaway area.
Children watch the ceremony as a RDRC worker stands ready to give out holiday chocolates to everyone after the display is lit.
Capt. Walter Salowski (commander of the 101 precinct) extends wishes from “all the cops in the 101 [for everyone] to have a great holiday.”
In addition to extending holiday wishes to those attending the ceremony, Community Board 14 District Manager Jonathan Gaska speaks about some of the improvements yet to be made in the Far Rockaway business district.
