Carols, Santa and Treats at Chamber Tree Lighting

More than 100 residents gathered on Beach 116 Street last Friday evening to drink hot chocolate, sing Christmas carols and meet Santa Claus as the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce held their Christmas tree-lighting ceremony.
Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Joanie Omeste handed out hot chocolate and candy cane treats.
Police Officer Kenneth Beecher stands with Belle Harbor Property Owners Association member Regina Lizzi, Fallon Mullen and Deidra Mahr.
Vera Powers, St. Francis de Sales Children’s Choir/Folk Group director, plays the flute as co-director, Veronica Quinn, sings. The children performed “Jingle Bells,” “Joy to the World,” “Silent Night,” “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” and other holiday favorites.
Santa Claus, who traveled by pickup (driven by Kenny Good) instead of his traditional sled due to the wet weather and lack of snow, arrives on Beach 116 Street.
Santa Claus steps beneath one of the tents set up to shield children from the rain.
