for larger version       Mighty Cops Pull Woman From Burning SUV
100 Precinct Police Officer Ripp and two strapping sergeants, Maccarino and Cerrato, were the first to arrive at the Beach 92 Street intersection after the call came in at about 7:30 p.m. The three men quickly righted the 3,000-plus pound vehicle, with help from Police Officer Kenneth Beecher, and pulled the woman to safety. Firefighters, who also arrived quickly, extinguished the fire – eliminating the risk of an explosion. An eyewitness told police that a northbound black Saturn coupe, which contained four passengers, blew the stop sign at the intersection and smashed into the SUV, which was headed west on the boulevard. The impact sent the SUV tumbling onto its side and careening into a fire department emergency callbox on the northeast side of the boulevard. The woman and another person injured in the crash were taken to Jamaica Hospital, according to police and fire department spokespersons. The extent of their injuries was not clear and their names were not released. Traffic on Rockaway Beach Boulevard was rerouted, from Beach 91 and Beach 94 Streets, for about an hour and a half. The fire department callbox, which was pulled down from its electrical connection and nearly uprooted in the accident, was replaced the next morning.
