Channel Renews Mardi Gras Festival After Year Off

While no parade was held last Labor Day, the 2002 parade was a large success. These young ladies danced the parade away right on their float.

The Broad Channel Mardi Gras will resume on Labor Day weekend after a year’s hiatus when the Broad Channel Athletic Club declined to run the yearly event. The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department (BCVFD) hosts this year’s Mardi Gras.

Events to raise funds for the Mardi Gras and for the BCVFD have been going on all summer and they will culminate this weekend with a series of events in the community.

On Friday, September 3, the volies will host an afternoon “Countdown” as the Noel Road firehouse that will include DJ Teddy, face painting and rides for the kids. Also at the countdown will be the drawing for the $10,000 prize.

Uncle Sam was a theme used by many of the floats and the walkers. This year’s parade is expected to be the largest ever.

On Saturday, September 4, Family Day will begin at noon at the BCAC Memorial Field on Cross Bay Boulevard. There will be athletic events all during the afternoon and the day will end with “Crowning Night” at the winning bar.

On Sunday, September 5, there will be a home-judging contest to choose “The Most Decorated House” in the community. Judges urge residents to “be creative, be festive, be patriotic, be original.” Many residents will spend the day making their floats for the Monday parade. In the evening, “Visitation Night” will be held.

On Monday, September 6, the culminating event of the weekend, The Labor Day Parade, will take place on Cross Bay Boulevard. Registration will take place beginning at 11:30 a.m. with the parade set to step off at

1 p.m.
