Neglect, Rodents Haunt Old Rockaway Courthouse

Northside view of Courthouse
Hazardous, filthy and unhealthy- those are some of the words used to describe the state of the former courthouse on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 92 Street by Rockaway resident Jim Hurley, who provided these pictures to The Wave.

Behind the rusted iron fence and barbed wire, the building is a haven for mice, raccoons, bugs and pigeons, according to Hurley.

Other hazards include broken glass, tall weeds and branches that hang onto the sidewalk.

Despite many attempts at development through the years, the building still stands empty.

The building is owned by the City of New York and has been vacant since the early 1960s.
