Leaky Gas Main Sparks PS 43 Evacuation

More than 300 summer school students and faculty were evacuated from PS 43 in Edgemere on Wednesday, when a construction crew working nearby a high-pressure gas main punctured the main, releasing gas to the atmosphere.

Units from both the New York City Police Department and the Fire Department evacuated 300 students and 50 faculty members from the school, which is at Beach 28 Street and the boardwalk, at about 9:40 a.m., following a report of the gas leak 28-12 Seagirt Boulevard.

The evacuees were taken to nearby PS 106, on Beach 35 Street as a precaution, according to a Department of Education spokesperson.

The break in the gas main was sealed within a half hour by crews from KeySpan Energy.
