Anna and the Mets: Benson Excited About N.Y.

By Joe McDonald

At this time of year, everyone in New York is an expert on baseball. Enter Anna Benson, who brings new meaning to the term “Hot Stove.” With all the rumors, trade talk and the free agent frenzy that occupies Mets fans these days, opinions are handed out like Santa’s presents.

Benson, the wife of Mets right-hander Kris Benson and FHM pinup girl, is no different.

“I love Pedro. I watched his career for years and I am not very interested in baseball or sports, but there are just certain people you keep an eye out for and Pedro is one of them,” Anna Benson said. “I think that Pedro is going to help see tickets at Shea and that is an important thing.”

She even has some ideas on how the Mets can improve with this acquisition.

“Next on my wish list is Sammy Sosa. I absolutely love Sammy and I think he would be great on the team. I think he would draw so many fans and sell so many tickets,” she said. “I have been pecking at the Mets to pick him up.”

With the way the rumors are flying these days, she might get her wish.

That’s the way things are going to Kris and Anna Benson. The happy couple has had a year that most people dream about; with a new three year, $22.5 million dollar contract for Kris, a modeling and acting career for Anna and a Congressional Citation for their charity, Benson’s Battalion .

Not to mention a new home in New York City.

“We love New York,” she said. “The people are so awesome; the shopping is so amazing and the food is just off the hook. I have never been anyplace like New York all my life.”

Besides the city and its atmosphere, Anna speaks very highly of Met owners, Fred and Jeff Wilpon and their type of management. It was one of the reasons why they chose to only negotiate with New York, even though their hometown Atlanta Braves was interested. “The Wilpons are very generous and very open-minded. They know me; know how I am; and they know most of what I say are jokes,” Mrs. Benson said. “They laugh like crazy when I say stuff to them.”

That generosity also runs through the Benson household, given they donate millions to various police, fire and EMS units. Benson’s Battalion was started after the attacks of 9/11 because Anna felt that many of the police departments around the country did not have sufficient first strike gear in case there was another attack.

“It is a charity like no other kind,” she said. “Police officers are not allowed to ask for money and I didn’t think that was fair’ so I developed a charity that I could ask for the money for them.”

For their efforts, Rep. Melissa Hart (R-PA) last February submitted a statement to the Congressional Record on Benson’s behalf about what the charity has accomplished over the past few years.

Even with all the good work the Bensons have accomplished with through the charity, it has been Anna’s career that has been taking the spotlight.

In the December issue of FHM, Anna was featured in a semi-nude photo shoot and answered some sexually explicit questions. To further the point she recently claimed on “The Howard Stern Show” that she would sleep with the whole Met team if her husband suddenly became unfaithful.

Anna claims all of this was in good fun and most of what she says is a joke, but also wants to make a point about baseball players’ infidelities.

“My point of that whole thing is if you want to embarrass me and get some hooker to cheat on me, then I will embarrass you so badly that you won’t be able to do your job again,” Mrs. Benson said. “If all the girls start thinking like me, then their husbands won’t screw around too much.”

Kris has been faithful and she has no reason to get her revenge. Anna really just wants to enjoy her time in New York and start pursuing her acting career. And if that doesn’t work out, she could always advise the Mets on player moves.
