Healthy Players Help Stella Maris Stay Undefeated

Stella Maris’ Junior Varsity basketball tipped off their 2004 season with two tough league losses to Bishop Loughlin and FontBonne Hall Academy. The twelve-player roster (including 10 freshmen players) boasts some seasoned players; some relative newcomers to the sport and all possess an eagerness to improve and phenomenal team spirit. Alicia Blakely, Clare Carey, Kathleen Haggerty, Erica Mazzarelli, Christina Musso, Alexandria Nieves, Rita Reagan, Erica Scandalis, Btittney Sorriano and Christina Tello join sophomores Kathleen Gleason and Arlene Jean. The team, under the direction of Mr. John Raphael, utilizes a full court, aggressive man-to-man defense. The team’s manager is Stephanie Mazzarelli.

Kathleen Haggerty and Clare Carey (2 of the more seasoned players) have shown great promise thus far while Alicia Blakely and Alexandria Nieves are demonstrating the raw skills necessary to succeed on the high school level. The team travels to St. Agnes (Saturday) and Bishop Ford (Monday) for the first game of Varsity doubleheaders.

Stella’s Varsity team improved their league record to 3-0 with league victories over Catherine McAuley and Font Bonne Hall. Flipper Footnotes: Varsity has gone from Super Six to Elite Eight. 2 down and 3 to go! Just who is this Sally Long Arms? JV: lesson # 1- bring something to eat to away games. EC is that another bottle of water in your hand? Varsity: you learned this in kindergarten- open a window, close a window.
