Claire H. Dockery

Attorney

Claire H. (nee Hyland) Dockery, a Rockaway resident for 35 years, died on November 25.

Dockery, who was born in Queens, was a past treasurer at St. Francis de Sales School and a retired attorney.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Vincent Hyland.

Dockery is survived by her husband, John P. Dockery; daughter, Mary Kate Tuohy (John); son, Thomas Vincent Dockery (Karen); nieces and nephews, Katherine-Colleen, Vincent Thomas and Patrick Francis Hyland, Natalie Marie and Cassandra Rose Lawrence.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A mass was celebrated at St. Francis de Sales. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery.

Emani Monique Lewis

Girl Scout, Olympic Hopeful

Emani Monique Lewis, a 12-year-old girl who was a Big Sister in the Girl Scouts and had dreams of competing in the Olympic Games, died on November 22.

Emani, who was born in Queens on February 19, 1992, was a lifelong Rockaway resident. She belonged to Girl Scout Troop 663-664 and was a Big Sister to 45 other Girl Scouts. She was nominated for Big Sister of the Year in 2004, and she enjoyed writing and helping others.

She was preceded in death by her great great grandmothers, Mabnel Simmons and Maybel Gibson; great grandmothers, Mary Elizabeth Ellison; and grandfather, Howard Ellison.

Emani is survived by her mother, Tykeisha Nock; father, Rashid Lewis; brothers, Antoine and Rashid; sisters, Sariah, Nia and Shonna; special maternal grandmother, Patricia Nock; grandfather, Leroy Fleming; paternal grandmother, Nadine Lewis; great-grandfather, Joseph Bratton; great-grandmother Naomi Lewis; great-great aunt Rose Pelzer; great aunts, Ann Bratton, Meme, Sheri and Ann; great uncles, Joseph (Sophie) Bratton, Ronald (Susan) Bratton, Michael (Jackie) Bratton, Anthony (Tammie) Bratton, Russell (Latoya) Bratton, and Tessa; aunts, Tanisha Nock and Melissa Ellison; uncle, Randolph Ellison; special cousins, Latiqua, Tyheem, Lavasia, Khalil, Monee, Marc, Ray-Ray, Monique, Chavela, Claraissa and Christopher; godparents, Tyrell Anderson, Natelle Pollidore and Tracey “Bobby” Breaker; god-sister Rayanna, god-brother, Jahlil, god-daughter StarAsia; best friend, Nakita; special friends Queenie, Laquaisha, Quaniece and, of course, Bow-Wow, as well as other family members and friends.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home. Visitation was held at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where a mass was also celebrated.

Interment was at Cypress Hills Cemetery.

John Joseph Healy

Four Decades In Rockaway

John Joseph Healy, a Rockaway resident for 40 years, died on November 24.

Healy, who was born in the Bronx, served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol, and is survived by his son, Reverend John J. Healy.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A mass was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.

Darrell Bernard McLain

Benefits Coordinator

Darrell Bernard McLain, a lifelong Rockaway resident, died on November 21. He was 38.

McLain, who was born in Queens on June 7, 1966, participated in Rockaway Little League and attended John Jay College. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice with a minor Forensic Psychology and had one semester to complete his Masters Degree. He worked for TYCO Preschool and later for the New York City Board of Education Retirement System as a benefits coordinator. He was a parishioner at St. John Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Maravell McLain.

McLain is survived by his mother, Celestine McLain of Rockaway Beach; sister, Laressa McLain of Rockaway Beach; grandmother, Lovie Holloway of Rockaway Beach; paternal aunt, Virdell McLain of Ariton, Alabama; uncle, Albert Lee Holloway of Lumberton New Jersey; aunt, Earlene Fletcher of Detroit, Michigan; aunt Gerldine Howard of Utica Miss; aunt, Daisy (Andrew) Hickson of South Ozone Park; godmother Gene Pitman of New York, godson, Elijah White; friends, Allen Miller, Eddie Ranieri, Joey Fadde, Joe White and John Skroce and Liz; and other family and friends.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home. Visitation was held at St. John’s Baptist Church, in Inwood. Interment was at Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn.

Laurel M. Pelt

Domestic

Laurel M. Pelt, an Arverne resident, died on November 22. She was 87.

Pelt, who was born in Tunica, Mississippi on January 17, 1917, was a member of the Community Church of God in Christ. She had been a domestic.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Hood; father, General Hood; son, Ben Pelt; and daughter, Shirley Johnson.

Pelt is survived by her children, Murrylene Holland, Eloise Lee, James Pelt (Emma), Alice Nix (Morris) all of New York, Gloria Jones (Floyd), Claudia Wesson (Arthur) of Chicago and Charlene Barber (Tyrone) of Detroit; 33 grandchildren; 93 great-grand children; 52 great-great grandchildren; and other neighbors and friends.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home. Visitation was held at the Community Church of God in Christ. Interment was at All Saints Cemetery in Great Neck.
