Undermanned Flippers Win First Two Games
Stella Maris High School’s Varsity Basketball team debuted on their home court last Wednesday, November 24 th in a non-league contest against Tottenville High School (Staten Island). Historically, the two teams play closely contested games, as was the case this time. The Lady Flippers gutted out a 44-43 victory on the heels of some timely three-point sharp shooting and the clutch foul shooting of Junior Erin Casey.
The undermanned Stella Six (due to five players unable to play due to injuries/illnesses) prevailed in a back and forth contest. Down 19-16, at half time, SM was relatively content to be within striking distance and only three team fouls expended. Junior Jennifer Anglero had led the scoring with 12 points including a first quarter, buzzing-beating, half court shot. The third quarter proved to be pivotal as SM came out with guns blazing. Juniors MaryGrace Brady (3) and Catherine Rudden combined for 12 points off treys. The Flippers outscored the Pirates 19-10 in the period to go up by 6. In the fourth, the Home White hit 5 for 7 from the line as Tottenville went 3 for 8. With the game tied at 43 all with 14 seconds left, Junior Caroline Weeks’ smothering defense caused a tipped, then loose ball that was snared by Erin Casey.
