Asthma Workshop At M.S. 53
M.S. 53 hosted an asthma workshop for parents on November 19. Parent coordinator Yvette Dennis and Attendance Facilitator Ken Yanek helped run the event that featured nurse practitioner Maureen McElhinney of North Shore University Hospital and Department of Education nurse Castagne.
Through use of a video, an overhead projector, anatomical models, and inhalers, parents were taught about asthma, its causes and treatment. Different asthma triggers were discussed and ways to avoid them.
In recent years, M.S. 53, along with the entire city, has seen an increase in the number of students with asthma. Many new medications were highlighted, along with new machines that help asthmatics recover faster from an episode.
