Bank Robbery, Suspected Bomb Closes Shopping Area

A large portion of the Far Rockaway shopping area was closed down for several hours on Tuesday afternoon when an attempted bank robbery went bad. Detective Noel Waters, a spokesperson for the NYPD, told The Wave that a man in his 40’s entered the Chase Bank at 1912 Mott Avenue and handed a teller a note that said he had a bomb in a bag at his feet. The teller pushed an alarm and the man fled the bank without any money, leaving behind the black garbage bag that allegedly held a bomb. The bank, as well as stores and offices for a block square were evacuated by police. The bomb squad, pictured suiting up to enter the bank, found a radio wrapped in paper in the black garbage bag.
