Artist Hopes New Mural Will Spur Youth to Read

Local artist Leigh Walls (left) stands in front of the new mural he designed and painted on the outside wall of the Arverne Library. Joining him is one of the teens who helped him paint the mural – Erick Footman. Others who helped on the project were Tashawn Chappell, Lavell Adams, Aaliyan Wheeler (9) and Walls’ 10 year-old niece Tyler. The Cheshire Cat, from Alice In Wonderland, smiles down from the mural that contains various figures from literature. Walls hopes that young people will see the mural and be sparked into reading more about those in the painting. Joining the Cheshire Cat are the Three Pigs, Quez from Moby Dick, the bear from the Jungle Book, Tarzan, John Henry, the Monkey King from Chinese Myths, the Big Bad Wolf and the Flying Monkeys from the Wizard of Oz.
