Anniversary Of AA 587 Crash Draws Large, Drenched Crowds

The corner of Beach 131 Street and Newport Avenue was a sea of umbrellas on Friday, November 12, for the third anniversary of the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 into Belle Harbor. For the third year in a row, the service was held in a driving downpour that did not deter the families of those who died in the crash from coming to Rockaway.

After the memorial ceremony, most of the family members marched the two short blocks to St. Francis de Sales Church for a mass. Many of those present wrapped themselves in blankets given out by the Red Cross.
