Author Rita Williams-Garcia Visits BCHS Library

Rita Williams-Garcia, author of several popular young adult fiction titles No Laughter Here, Every Time a Rainbow Dies, Like Sisters on the Home Front, Fast Talk on a Slow Track, Blue Tights, entertained students with anecdotes about her life, shared tips on writing, answered questions and generally encouraged the students to keep reading and continue their education. Everyone enjoyed the very animated discussion and question and answer repartee. Williams-Garcia commented, “I am very impressed with the sophisticated level of questions from the students.”

Librarians, Betty Zapolsky and Mary Moskowitz believe that involving students in reading and writing events improves student performance. Behind the Book , an organization that matches authors with schools arranged the author visit. Jo Umans, Executive Director of Behind the Book is always looking for financial support for other author/school programs. Check out their website www.behindthebook.org where you will see the essays written by Beach Channel High School students. Visit www.RitaWG.com for information on Rita Williams-Garcia’s writing and entering her short story contest.
