St Thomas More Captures Halloween Titles
A beautiful Halloween Day capped off a great season for the St Thomas More Cross Country team at the CYO Diocesan Championships held at Alley Spring Park on Sunday October 31st. Ghouls and Goblins stole some of our runners but St Thomas won one Individual Diocesan Title and four team trophies as 22 runners braved gorgeous weather and ran while piles of cookies and candy sat on the team table.
The senior boy’s opened our racing day finishing third behind Our Lady of Lourdes. To tally a cross-country score, you add the place finishes of your top three runners. The team with the lowest total is the champ. Daniel Lee completed his St Thomas running career by finishing 7th in 6:45 over the 1.15 mile course. Shawn Egan (7:06 12th) and Thomas McNoble (7:30 18th) completed this small senior team. The coordinators would like to thank our seniors for many years of service to the STM program. Individual medals were given to the top fifteen finishers in each race.
Kara Egan (5:39 4th) led our Junior Girl’s to a fifth place team finish. Brianne Kelly (6:26, 18th) stepped up a division and Christa Hedderson (7:17, 28th) ran over the .8-mile course. Taylor Conlon (5:42, 19th), Liam Anderson (6:26) and Robert Kiernan (6:52) stepping up from the Novice Level formed our Junior Boys Team.
Our Novice Division is usually our largest. In most years, 25 first, second and third graders wear the white and green STM track shirt. Only nine Novice runners came to the starting line last Sunday. Kristen Sullivan (3:49 7th) led our Girls to a 5th place finish with: Caroline Kane (4:11 20th), Elizabeth Lisk (4:53 40th), Carolyn Kelly (5:25 52nd) and Jane McNoble (5:26 53rd – she fell).
Philip Carr ran 12 seconds faster (3:46 21st) over this Novice Half Mile Course. He was followed by: Joseph Moran (4:33 40th), Edward Carr (4:37 46th) and Aiden Strongreen (5:15 56th).
The Bantam boy’s easily won the sectional title last week and looked very strong. As the runners made the final turn, St Thomas in its Halloween Green and White was easily in the lead. Jack Kane won his 2nd Individual Diocesan Title setting the STM Bantam Course record of 3:56. Sean McNoble (4:27 9th), Patrick Egan (4:39 14th) and Connor Strongreen (4:40 15th) completed this runner-up team.
St Thomas More – Track Alumni: Paul Hedderson ran sub 30 minutes for a 5 mile course helping Norwich University finish 3rd in the Greater North American Conference. Mary Eillen Kiernan (Bishop Kearney) ran 20:14 and Ryan Woerner (Xavier) (15:29) on the Van Courtland 2.5 mile course at the CHSAA Sectional Championships last weekend. Kevin D’Emic finished second and led Xavier to its first ever Freshmen Championship in the NY Section Race by running a fast 9:10 on the 1.5 mile course. Dylan Dombrowski (Molloy) cleared 13’ in the Pole Vault in a Hip Development Meet in New Jersey.
This fall, twenty-seven boys and fourteen girl harriers scampered across the fields of Alley Spring Park for St Thomas More capturing two sectional team titles. Kevin D’Emic, Kara Egan and Jack Kane set new STM Course Records and “a bunch of kids had a good time on Sunday afternoons”. Maria Hines and Joe Dombrowski extend great thanks to all our volunteer timers, scorers, label and tag distributors, and picture takers and to all our parents for your support for the ten years we coordinated this program.
