St. Virgilius Pastor

  • Reverend Monsignor Kieran J. Martin, P.E., D. Min., who was an administrator and former pastor at St. Virgilius Roman Catholic Church in Broad Channel, died on October 30. He was 81.
  • Martin was born on August 3, 1923, and was baptized at St. Cecelia’s Parish in Brooklyn. He was ordained on June 3, 1950 and served in Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Bayside, St. Francis of Assisi in Brooklyn and St. Virgilius in Broad Channel.

    In 1968, Martin was named administrator of St. Virgilius. He became pastor in 1976 and continued there until his retirement in 1994, after which he relocated to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Flatlands, Brooklyn.

    Father John Wtulich of St. Virgilius said Martin became a “well-loved and respected” member of the communities he served throughout his life as he celebrated countless masses, baptisms, weddings and funerals.

    Martin was a member of the Diocesan Catholic Office of Education Pastor’s Advisory Board and the Priest Senate. He was chairman of the Bishop’s Committee on Alcoholism, an executive board member of the Community Organization of Broad Channel and a board member of the Rockaway Youth Counsel Center. Martin was Chaplain to the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department and the Knights of Columbus.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Margaret (nee Nealon) Martin, and is survived by his sister, Anne Slattery.

    Martin was waked at St. Virgilius and St. Thomas Aquinas. A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Thomas Aquinas, followed by burial at St. John’s Cemetery in Middle Village.

    Madeline DellaVolpe

    Administrator

    Madeline DellaVolpe, a Rockaway resident for 25 years, died on November 2.

    DellaVople, who was born in Howard Beach, was a member of the Hammels Senior Center and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

    DellaVolpe is survived by a son, Frank DellaVolpe; daughter, Caroline Wassenbergh; sister, Anne Lund; and grandchildren, John, Frank, Joe, Paul and Jennifer Wassenbergh and Angelique Della Volpe.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home on Friday, November 5, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Other arrangements were kept private.

    Linda Maude Christie

    Home Health Aide

    Linda Maude Christie, a Rockaway resident since 1973, died on October 11.

    Christie, who was born in St. Mary, Jamaica, West Indies, on April 13, 1917, was a home health aide. She was a member of the Pentecostal City Mission Church in Far Rockaway from its inception, and was active in the Y.P.G. Senior Choir and Missionary Department.

    She is survived by her daughters, Elfreda and Secreta (Sey); son, Calbert; son in law, Alvin; granddaughters, Velvarita, Beverly, Claudine, Claudette, Cherilyn and Denise; a grandson; in laws, Gianni, Dale, Carlos; niece, Lorna; nephew, Randolph; great grandchildren, Jonathan, Daniel, David, Alicia and Marissa; and her church family and friends.

    Funeral arrangements entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home. Visitation and services were held at International Pentecostal City Mission, Inc. Interment was at Pinelawn Cemetery.

    Doreen Ross Mugavin

    Registered Nurse

    Doreen Ross Mugavin, a Rockaway resident for 40 years, died on October 31. She was 52.

    Mugavin, who was born in New York City, was a member of the Stella Maris graduating class of 1969. She became a registered nurse and worked at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital and Coney Island Hospital.

    She is survived by her son, Jesse Ross; mother, Barbara Bernaschina; stepfather, Gabriel Bernaschina; sisters, Deborah Mugavin and Denise Nezolosky; brother, Robert Mugavin (Czarina); and nieces and nephews, Erin Poretti, Stephen Nezolosky and Alexandra Mugavin.

    Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Orlando Funeral Home in Brooklyn. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima on November 10, at 7:30 p.m.

    Lydia Norton

    Retired Deli Manager

    Lydia Norton, a retired deli manager, passed away on October 30. She was 69.

    Norton, who was born in Brooklyn, relocated to Brevard County, Florida in 1978. She was a member of Ascension Catholic Church.

    She was predeceased by her son, Lawrence Murray and grandson, Harrison Murray.

    Norton is survived by her grandchildren, Donovan L. Murray, Marie Murray-Denny, Eric Murray and Patricia Murray; great grandsons, Andrew Denny and Lawrence Eberhart; daughter in law, Nora Murray; and nephew, Michael Cobb.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Brownie-Maxwell Funeral Home. A funeral mass was celebrated at Ascension Catholic Church in Melbourne, Florida.

    Nora C. Waldron

    Housewife

    Nora C. Waldron, a Rockaway resident for 75 years, died on November 1. She was 91.

    Waldron, who was born in Manhattan, was an active parishioner of St. Mary Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church in Far Rockaway. She was a housewife.

    Waldron was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1974.

    She is survived by her son, Reverend Monsignor John E. Waldron; daughter, Kathleen Grant of West Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and sisters, Catherine Brady of Staten Island and Anastasia Meade of Yonkers.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Meserole Funeral Home. A mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church at 10 a.m. – on what would have been Waldron’s 92nd birthday – Friday, November 5. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, Queens.
