As part of Gateway National Rereation Area’s annual Herbert Johnson Lecture Series, Author and Historian Benjamen Miller will be giving a presentation about the history of Barren Island on Wednesday, November 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Floyd Bennett Field’s building 272.
The program entitled “Garbage in New York, Then and Now: Barren Island and Beyond, “Mr. Miller will discuss the history of Barren Island form 1852 to 1936, during which the site of present day Floyd Bennett Field, was New York City’s first large scale recycling effort. It was at Barren Island that much of New York City’s garbage and dead animals, were converted to grease, fertilizer and other products; but it was also a community, where people lived, worked and went to school.
Miller will also talk about the historic plans for developing Jamaica
Bay into the world’s largest industrial seaport.
