Rockaway Win Gives Fisheads Shot At Playoffs
Rockaway Rugby cruised to a 63-5 victory over Morris N.J last Saturday at Ft. Tilden which sets up a season finale with long time foe North Jersey this Saturday, (Oct.30th) for the third and final playoff spot in Metro N.Y. Rugby.
Led by former Captain Jim “Kermit” Egan, the Fisheads took control of the match in the first 20 minutes with tries by Egan, Tom Twomey and Danny Lunny. After briefly letting up towards the end of the first half, the Fisheads stormed into the second stanza with tremendous all around play. Great lineout work by Grouch McCann and Lee (wildman) Osborne helped Rockaway control the ball throughout the remainder of the match. Making his seasonal debut at the Flyhalf position was Kevin (Stonybrook) Waters, who brought speed and excellent defense to the position. With Waters at the helm, the Fishead backs were featured as the main option of the day which was stark contrast to the philosophies of seasoned veterans Wayne Fox and Kevin Wrafter, who are to known to “keep it in the forwards” a bit more. The beneficiaries of the new Rockaway quarterback were centers Johnny “clothes line” O’Connor and Haden “it’s all good” Kose who each had several opportunities to bust it up the middle.
Pitching in for the Fisheads was giant-sized Bill (ding) Kelly, who was looking to defend his brother’s honor. Also helping to the cause was Mike the Russian, Chris Cingari, Barry Cowhead, Chris Callaghan Keilan Smith and Rockaway’s other man mountain Phil Tufano, who broke loose with a 40 meter rumble towards the end of the match. Soon to be retiring Johnny Oak thrilled the crowd with one of his signature behind the back passes to a fit Barry Cowhead, who was following up as usual. It was a good day for the Fisheads, who were in desperate need of a bounce back game. Tune in for the season finale vs. North Jersey 1 p.m. on Oct.30th at Fort Tilden.
