Safavi Joins SJEH Staff
Cardiothoracic surgeon Ali Safavi, MD, has joined the surgical staff of St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, South Shore. Dr. Safavi has undergraduate and medical school degrees from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA. He completed a general surgery residency at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center and a cardiothoracic fellowship at Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. He is the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Harlem Hospital and North General Hospital and an attending cardiac surgeon at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center.
Dr. Safavi’s main area of interest in open heart surgery includes valve repair, minimally invasive off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery and treatment of heart failure including use of ventricular assist devices. He plans to offer at St. John’s the placement of biventricular pacemakers , a relatively new procedure for patients with heart failure. His area of interest in thoracic surgery includes surgical management of locally advanced lung and esophageal cancer as well as lung volume reduction surgery in patients with end-stage emphysema.
