SJEH Hosts ‘Diabetes Awareness Day’ Nov. 12
A day-long interactive Diabetes Awareness Day will be held on Friday, November 12, 2004, during National Diabetes Awareness Month. Co-sponsored by American Diabetes Association, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, and Visiting Nurse Service of New York.
The Diabetes Awareness Day will held from 9 am until 3 pm at St. John’s, which is located at 327 Beach 20th Street.
Presentations will include: “Current Management of Diabetes” by Sheldon Markowitz, MD, endocrinologist and Chairman of Internal Medicine at St. John’s; “Diabetes Management in the Home” by Yael Reich, RN, Diabetes Educator of Visiting Nurse Service; the bariatric program at Brookhaven Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center; and talks on eye care by ophthalmologist Steven Sherman, MD, and foot care by Lloyd Bardfeld, DPM, Chief of Podiatry at St. John’s. There will be an “Ask the Pharmacist” session (please bring in your medication bottles for a consultation with a pharmacist), a cooking demonstration by a certified nutritionist, exhibits of diabetes products, and free educational information.
The talks will begin at 10 am.
Free screenings will be conducted for diabetes and hypertension. A box lunch will be included and there will be door prizes and giveaways.
The Diabetes Awareness Day is supported by Healthfirst, Pfizer and Sentosa/ Brookhaven Nursing Home.
