Early Winter Storm At Sea Erodes Beaches

A recent storm several hundred miles off the Rockaway shoreline has had a devastating effect on the coastline of the peninsula as long tubes of breakers eroded the beach. The situation, which exists all along the south shore of Long Island as well, has put Parks Department officials on alert to the possibility that this may very well be a difficult winter for the shoreline. “We’re just going into the winter when we get severe erosion,” said one Parks Department worker on the beach. “This much erosion in the fall is very unusual.”
